Bremen Overseas Research & Development Association (BORDA)

Delhi, India

Bremen Overseas Research & Development Association – BORDA is a German non-profit established in 1977 with the mission of “Improved Sanitation for All.” Operating in 20 countries across six regions, BORDA supports functional, sustainable solutions in water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste management. Our work integrates ecological, health, and socio-economic concerns, while enabling policies and standards. Over the past 25 years, BORDA has partnered with multiple ULBs and State Governments to strengthen WASH services in India. In 2015, we set up India’s first effectively operated Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) with the BMZ, the BMGF, and CDD India. Insights from this FSTP have been instrumental in advancing FSM frameworks, informing government and civil society initiatives in India and Bangladesh. Presently, BORDA focuses on the impacts of unplanned urbanisation and climate change on small-town WASH ecosystems in South Asia. In India, we work with ~20 towns across UT of Ladakh, Karnataka, and Kerala.
