Water supply and sanitation access strategies (Indonesia)

Thesis summary

Along with the growth of Pontianak City, the population of slum settlements has increased over the last five years. The factors that influence the development of settlements are population growth and urbanization. The existence of slum settlements in Pontianak City is due mainly to inadequate basic facilities and infrastructure, lack of quality infrastructure, and a lack of public understanding of the importance of a healthy and quality environment. The sanitation risk in the slum area of the study location shows that the typology of the riverside in the Kayu Manis Area is very high risk and in the Panglima A Rani area of high risk, while in the lowland typology area in the RA Kartini area the risk is high. The sector that has the highest risk is domestic wastewater management. While stakeholder priorities show different results, the main improvement priority is the provision of drinking water by 30.3%. In determining the improvement of water and sanitation, the level of sanitation risk and the typology of settlements have not been considered. Strategies that can be carried out are improving facilities and infrastructure, drafting and enforcing regulations, socializing and training the community, implementing the area with the Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), improving drinking water companies’ quality and performance management, and increasing service capacity.
