Water security and urban resilience (India)
Water resource is important and global fresh water resources is very less which as around 2.5% of the total water available. Every fourth largest city in the world is facing water related stress and over the years, the total availability of fresh water resources in decreasing and access to it is reducing by more rate with only 2.5% of world’s fresh water resources our country contains 20% of world population hence, the obvious water insecurity situation. According to the world bank estimates in spite of improvement in provision of drinking water, 21% of all the communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water, diarrhoea alone causing more than 100 thousand deaths annually. The water supply provision at household level includes involvement of various informal water market in order to improve the water adequacy and accessibility. This is alternate to the municipal water supply so, the study seeks to understand the reasons for high dependency on informal water market and how is this helping in improving the water insecurity and achieving sustainable development goal 3 and 6.
