Use of recycled plastic in low-cost toilets (India)
The aim of this project was to reduce the plastic waste by using the recycled plastic as building material for designing the low-cost toilets for rural households. The aim is to design the low cost toilet using recycled plastic which shall include preparing the plan of toilet with detailing, to create bricks using plastic waste, to prepare a mix design with M20 grade of concrete with 5-10% of plastic waste in concrete, to determine the compressive strength, of concrete with plastic waste by casting the concrete cubes, to study the connection between the addition of recycled waste plastic and engineering properties, to design and use of bricks with plastic waste for use in walls. To design and test the cement a sand/plastic mortar mix for use in masonry and plastering (1:3 mix) was applied. The results obtained for all the buildings materials were found in the permissible limit even if their respective results were showing the decrease when there is increase in plastic percentage. Elaborating these benefits, the conclusion is to reduce the and recycle the plastic waste in the form of constructing low-cost houses, toilets in the rural areas. The bricks which were made using plastic waste can be utilized for the construction of brick masonry as the cost of one brick is cheaper than that of the fly ash brick. And in addition to that the brick weight is also less as compared with that of bricks. The plastic-containing bricks have advantage of cost and resource efficiency. Cement mortar prepared using plastic waste can be applied for internal plaster as well as external plaster.
