The University of N’Djamena (Chad) on a mission to the 2iE Institute to prepare for the integration of the GSGS RH WCIOA program

The University of N’Djamena (UNDJ) is moving closer to establishing a center of excellence in sanitation. This progress is the concrete outcome of a visit by its delegation to the GSGS Regional Hub for West, Central and Indian Ocean Africa (GSGS RH WCIOA), held at the 2iE Institute in Ouagadougou (host institution and coordinator of the Hub).

This process is part of an expansion strategy initiated in November 2024, when the University of N’Djamena was identified as a potential partner. After expressing its interest in joining the Hub, UNDJ had already participated in the co-creation workshop in November 2024 in Abidjan and in the curriculum review workshop in July 2025. The December visit therefore took place as a continuation of this process, aimed at formalizing the launch of the program at UNDJ. The meeting sought to lay the foundations for a major academic collaboration. The objective was twofold: to explore the implementation of the GSGS program within UNDJ, and to identify opportunities for developing joint projects with the 2iE Institute. At the opening of the discussions, Prof. Harinaivo Anderson ANDRIANISA, Director of the GSGS RH WCIOA, presented the initiative. He recalled that the GSGS program, launched in 2017 by IHE Delft with the support of the Gates Foundation, is now delivered by 55 institutions, with its central role reinforced by its restructuring into five regional hubs in 2024.

The Chadian delegation, composed of Dr. Adoum KRIGA, Dean of the Faculty of Exact and Applied Sciences; Dr. Abdallah MAHAMAT NOUR, Acting Head of the Geology Department; and Dr. Loukman BICHARA, Coordinator of the HydroSIG Master’s program, expressed strong interest in joining the GSGS RH WCIOA partners. The delegation emphasized the critical shortage of training programs and specialized faculty in non-sewered sanitation in Chad. The implementation of this master’s program is therefore essential to train a new generation of qualified experts and address local challenges.

The discussions made it possible to define a concrete roadmap for the implementation of the program at UNDJ. The GSGS RH WCIOA confirmed its support by committing to train UNDJ faculty members and mobilize its network to support them.On the sidelines of the meeting, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the 2iE Institute, exploring the potential for bilateral collaborations with the Hub’s host institution. This phase concluded on December 5, 2025, with key meetings with the Institute’s management (the Director General, the Director of Teaching and Academic Affairs, and the Director of the Department of Electrical and Energy Engineering), as well as a visit to the teaching and research facilities of the 2iE Institute.

L’Université de N’Djamena (UNDJ) se rapproche de la création d’un pôle d’excellence en Assainissement. Cette proximité est le résultat concret de la visite de sa délégation au Hub Régional GSGS pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest, Centrale et Océan Indien (GSGS RH WCIOA), qui s’est tenue à l’Institut 2iE de Ouagadougou (institut hôte et coordonnateur du Hub), du 2 au 5 décembre 2025.

Ce processus s’inscrit dans une stratégie d’expansion amorcée depuis novembre 2024, date à laquelle l’Université de N’Djamena a été ciblée. Après avoir manifesté son souhait d’intégrer le Hub, l’UNDJ avait déjà participé à l’atelier de co-création en novembre 2024 à Abidjan et à l’atelier de relecture du curricula de formation en juillet 2025. La visite de décembre s’est ainsi effectuée dansla continuité de ce processus visant à concrétiser l’ouverture du programme à l’UNDJ.

La rencontre visait à jeter les bases d’une collaboration académique majeure. L’objectif était double : explorer l’implémentation du programme GSGS au sein de l’UNDJ, et identifier les opportunités de développer des projets en collaboration avec l’Institut 2iE. En ouverture des échanges, le Pr. Harinaivo Anderson ANDRIANISA, Directeur du GSGS RH WCIOA, a présenté l’initiative. Il a rappelé que le programme GSGS, initié en 2017 par IHE Delft avec le soutien de la Fondation Gates, est aujourd’hui délivré par 55 institutions, son rôle central ayant été affirmé par la restructuration en cinq hubs régionaux en 2024.

La délégation tchadienne, composée notamment du Dr Adoum KRIGA, Doyen de la Faculté des Sciences Exactes et Appliquées, du Dr Abdallah MAHAMAT NOUR, Chef de département par Intérim de la géologie, et du Dr Loukman BICHARA, Responsable du Master HydroSIG, a exprimé un vif intérêt à rejoindre les partenaires du GSGS RH WCIOA. Elle a souligné le manque crucial de formations et d’enseignants spécialisés en Assainissement Non-Collectif au Tchad. L’implémentation de ce Master est donc essentielle pour former une nouvelle génération d’experts qualifiés et relever les défis locaux.

Les discussions ont permis de définir une feuille de route concrète pour la mise en place du programme à l’UNDJ. Le GSGS RH WCIOA a confirmé son soutien en s’engageant à former les enseignants de l’UNDJ et à mobiliser son réseau pour les appuyer. En marge de la rencontre, la délégation a effectué une visite de courtoisie à l’Institut 2iE, étudiant le potentiel de collaborations bilatérales avec l’Institut hôte du Hub. Cette phase s’est achevée le 5 décembre 2025 par des rencontres clés avec la direction (Directeur Général, Directeur des enseignements et des affaires académiques et le Directeur du département génie électrique et énergétique) et une visite des infrastructures pédagogiques et de recherche de l’Institut 2iE.
