Study of autonomous sanitation systems (Burkina Faso)

Thesis summary

One of the objectives of this study is to create and structure a local offer of basic sanitation services. Local entrepreneurs have been selected, trained and accredited in sanitation equipment production, business management and marketing. They have the capacity to produce and sell standardized sanitation equipment at a low cost and fixed selling price. This study is part of the support of these entrepreneurs to enable them to have a varied range of sanitation technologies (catalogue) adapted to the local demand. The process of this study began with an inventory of the autonomous sanitation technologies promoted by GRET and other actors used in Burkina Faso and in other similar contexts. Interesting and innovative technologies were listed, highlighting their dimensions, advantages/disadvantages, indications and average costs. Then, an evaluation of the perception, acceptability and expectations of the populations on the autonomous sanitation technologies used in their environment was made. The results of this evaluation relate to criteria such as technological quality, use, cultural and religious habits and socio-economic aspects. Improvement sessions were also initiated through an assessment of the adaptability where technical proposals were made to readjust the sizing of the technologies identified for the catalogue. Finally, the technical catalogue of autonomous sanitation technologies was structured following the technical proposals
