The Thodupuzha municipality area is characterized by abundant vegetation. Thodupuzha Municipality is responsible for managing the Solid waste generated within its Jurisdiction. The ULB has a resident population of about 52,045 in 2011 with an estimated present population of 57744. It is estimated to generate about 25.25 TPD of municipal solid waste every single day. The following are some of the challenges that apply to the current solid waste management system in the Municipality: (i) there is no proper systematic garbage collection and sorting method in place that covers the entire municipal area, (ii) there are no proper facilities for waste processing and treatment, (iii) during the festive seasons, large amount of waste are generated, and waste is disposed of in an unregulated manner at the point of origin or dumped at the dumping yard located in the municipality, (iv) waste management is not well- managed due to a lack of staff and infrastructure, (v) people are not aware of the importance of trash management, and (vi) disposal of legacy waste and reuse the land for scientific SWM system. The study focused on collection of municipal solid waste, segregation of solid waste, storage of solid wastes in systematic manner so as to prevent any unhygienic and insanitary conditions around the storage points, transportation of municipal solid waste, processing and disposal of the same at a scientific landfill site.
