Sanitation and health assessment (Burkina Faso)

Thesis summary

This study reviews the sanitation situation in the medical centers with surgical branches (CMA), urban medical centers (CMU) and the regional hospital center (CHR) in the Central East Region of Burkina Faso (RCES). It analyzes the situation of wastewater and excreta management (WEEE) and biomedical waste management (BMWM) and proposes a reference document for the development of an integrated sanitation management plan in two parts, namely WEEE management and BMWM. With regard to WAS, the resolution of the problems is based on five main actions. Action 1 aims to eradicate open defecation in all health facilities and to adopt good hygiene and sanitation practices. Action 2 consists of achieving universal and continuous access to sanitation services in health facilities. Action 3 aims at a better structuring and development of the wastewater and sludge management sector; Action 4 aims at improving and developing innovative and usable technologies and approaches. Action 5 aims to strengthen the financing, management and steering capacities of integrated sanitation management in health facilities. This document also proposes eight strategic orientations on the safe management of biomedical waste, which are broken down into eight actions.
