Public toilet performance analysis (India)
This study evaluates the performance of public toilet (PT) infrastructure in the pilgrim city of Pushkar, Rajasthan, recognizing the crucial role of public toilets in enhancing active life, promoting healthy aging, ensuring children’s fitness, and maintaining safety and hygiene in urban areas. The research addresses the challenges posed by inadequate sanitation facilities in tourist-centric cities, particularly during peak seasons. Focusing on Pushkar’s high floating population during festivals, the study reviews public toilet policies, initiatives, and programs in Indian cities with high tourism. An assessment framework is applied to analyze the functionality, operational models, and revenue generation of all 25 public toilets in Pushkar. Comparative scoring informs recommendations for addressing operational, maintenance, and cost recovery issues. The study advocates a dashboard-based monitoring strategy and proposes a star rating mechanism to incentivize hygiene, cleanliness, and functional infrastructure, emphasizing the need for improved public toilet management in tourist cities like Pushkar.
