Optimizing the sanitation value chain in Bouaké (Côte d’Ivoire)
Faecal sludge management in Bouaké is still informal, and the cost of emptying and transport is not fixed or regulated. A recent study sought to optimize the intermediate link of the sanitation value chain in the city and interviewed business leaders, truck owners, empties, the town hall technician, and the manager of faecal sludge treatment plant to gather information. It was discovered that the cost of emptying is largely influenced by fuel consumption. The empties were lacking in their health, hygiene, and working conditions. This activity was not covered by health insurance and none had received vaccines against diseases related to it. The majority (63%) of individuals did not receive quality hygiene safety and environment training, and many did not possess personal protective equipment. To address these issues, a sustainable organizational and economic model has been proposed, including a proposal for the emptying price of up to 2,400 FCFA per m³ by all the emptying men in Bouaké.
