On-site treatment by bioremediation technology (India)
Sanitation technologies generally treat waste by applying onsite or offsite wastewater treatment methods. Onsite sanitation technologies treat wastewater at the source and avoid transportation costs, however they typically require a large footprint and/or high maintenance. Duke University has developed a compact, turn-key onsite sanitation technology at the household scale that produces clear, treated non-potable water. This technology termed as “Reclaimer” is currently under field test and captures nutrients from the septic tank supernatant. The treated water can be utilized for vital purposes like for agricultural irrigation or for flushing the toilet thereby alleviating water scarcity.
