Thesis summary

Municipal waste management is crucial in achieving the sustainable development goals SDG-11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG-12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Proper waste management reduces the per capita environmental impact on cities, making cities more sustainable. Shifting to waste reduction and resource management at the individual and community level makes a better environment. Municipal waste is becoming an important issue of concern today. The rate at which this waste is contaminating the air, land, and groundwater is alarming. Municipal waste is contributing factor to global methane emissions and as such is posing a severe threat to human health and environmental quality. This study is much needed to know about best practices in solid waste management and also to realize our exposure to this hazardous situation. Hyderabad is the main focus of this study as it is one of the fastest- growing cities, and producing the highest per capita waste in India. Rapid urbanization is causing the generation of more municipal waste in every state. Therefore, there is a need for a proper municipal waste management system in every city in India.
