Scaling up of menstrual hygiene management (Burkina Faso)

Thesis summary

This study is part of a proposal for an optimal MHM technological option for scaling up Burkina Faso. It has set itself the objective of contributing to the improvement and finalization of the optimal MHM prototype in the school environment for scaling up. The collection data in the three regions namely the North Centre, the Centre-West and the South Central presented here come from the survey of these studies: The main place used for menstrual hygiene management: 36% use MHM booths ; 36% use latrines; 28% use the infrastructure of their homes; Type of hygienic material used: 56% cotton (disposable napkins) and 18% loincloths (washable napkins); Security and privacy: 100% of MHM latrines and cabins have a locking system and a protective wall; Gender and disability aspect: The majority of latrines are separated by gender and 65% have access ramps; Available water source: 80% of schools have an improved water source with mainly the PMH; Handwashing devices: 100% of schools have DLM with 64% containing water and 50% having soap; State of cleanliness: 67% of MHM latrines and cabins were very clean; Infrastructure maintenance: 76% of girls are responsible for maintaining infrastructure in schools; Knowledge about menstruation: 86% of respondents have knowledge about menstruation; Hygiene practices: More than 50% of girls have a good MHM practice. Finally, an MHM technological option proposal consisting of: 03 VIP Latrines with double alternating pits, 01 VIP Latrine for PMR and 01 MHM Cabin whose cost amounts to 7,117,542 FCFA excluding VAT
