Mass media as a determinant of community hygiene practices (Kenya)

Thesis summary

By reaching a wide and diverse audience simultaneously, mass media can effectively disseminate targeted hygiene-related messages, leading to improved knowledge. However, the effectiveness of mass media is often inadequately assessed and evaluated. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Gabra-Tulla Sub-County with the aim of assessing whether mass media played a role as a determinant of community hygiene practices. The study’s results revealed that inadequate awareness was the primary cause of poor hygiene practices in the study area. Mass media particularly radio, played a significant role in raising awareness and educating the community about the importance of good hygiene practices. Additionally, religious leaders, the area chief, and public health officers were highly regarded as opinion leaders in the field of hygiene in Gabra-Tulla, and their guidance and advice were trusted and respected by the local population. Therefore, the study concluded that mass media has the ability to change the behavior and attitudes of its audience. The study recommends that mass media to be exhaustively to aid in behavior change and creating awareness.
