Liquid management in rural areas (India)
This research project focuses on liquid waste management in rural areas, with a specific emphasis on strategies and solutions in the context of urbanizing India. Using the Gandhinagar villages in the state of Gujarat as a sample study, the project aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen 2.0’s vision of achieving ODF Plus villages. This entails sustaining open defecation-free status, ensuring solid and liquid waste management, and maintaining visual cleanliness. The study recognizes the opportunity to advance villages towards comprehensive environmental sanitation by effectively managing liquid waste. The report explores technology comparisons, feasibility, and scalability of liquid waste management systems, considering 15 technical parameters and financial checks. Additionally, it provides excel toolkits for designing scalable treatment systems. The report delves into implementational, operational, and governance approaches, addressing critical challenges to facilitate the state-level scaling up of complete liquid waste management in rural habitations.
