Inclusive sanitation action plan (India)

Thesis summary

Safe sanitation is a fundamental right under Sustainable Development Goal 6, but Indian cities’ rapid growth strains basic water and sanitation services. National programs like the Total Sanitation Program and Swachh Bharat Mission aim for safe sanitation, yet challenges persist, particularly in smaller towns. The research focuses on Deesa in Gujarat, proposes an action plan using the city-wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) approach for inclusive sanitation. The two options, fully centralised and hybrid systems, aim to ensure equitable service distribution among economic groups. The study, limited to wastewater management, advocates user-friendly data systems and capacity improvements. It offers a baseline assessment for small to medium-sized towns pursing inclusive sanitation, aiding urban local bodies in planning.
