Improvement of a financing model for non-sewered sanitation (Zambia)
Many decision making tools for monitoring the flow of finances in the sanitation sector have been developed. One of the tools is the eSOSViewTM Tool. The Tool monitors the flow of finances in faecal sludge management (FSM) services in an area of interest across the sanitation value chain (SVC). This Excel-based Tool can develop financial flow models for FSM service providers depending on the contextual and institutional arrangements. The Tool incorporates the types and number of onsite sanitation technologies, the volume of faecal sludge produced, the stakeholders involved and the CAPEX, OPEX and Revenue generated across the SVC. Additionally, the Tool also incorporates the five standard financial flow models, with a possibility of adding others based on the business ‘context. Despite its ability to generate the financial outlook of an FSM services provider, the Tool needed an upgrade due to the difficulties in its application. The research incorporated a mixed-methods approach in the pretext of upgrading it. The purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques were applied for selecting participants. A Modified Incentivised Model was generated after the Tool was tested in Lusaka, Zambia, and it was concluded the suggested updates of the Tool can depict a complicated overview of a city’s FSM financial transfers.
