Implementation of CBS (Burkina Faso)
Container-based Sanitation (CBS) is an essential element in the City-Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) strategy, as it addresses areas where conventional sanitation methods may not be suitable. In Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, several private companies have adopted CBS and are implementing unique business models. This research aims to gather insights from these companies to enhance the development of CWIS in Ouagadougou. The study involved examining various CBS technologies promoted in the city and obtaining feedback from key stakeholders. Findings reveal that all companies included in the study are legally registered and involved in selling and renting CBS toilets. These toilets are made locally or imported, with different manufacturing models being available. While the sale and rental of these toilets have proven profitable, participating firms believe that support from public authorities could further boost their profitability. The primary clientele for these companies includes humanitarian organizations, mining corporations, and public service providers. A survey was conducted regarding the public opinions on mobile toilet installations, which concluded that 65% of participants were highly satisfied with the service, 15% were satisfied, and 19% expressed dissatisfaction. Moreover, when comparing CBS toilets to other sanitation systems, 66% found them odorless, 29% considered them hygienic, and 2% regarded them as uncomfortable. A comprehensive SWOT analysis was also performed to evaluate regulatory, technical and socio-economic frameworks in order to recommend solutions for integrating CBS into Ouagadougou’s local context and supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
