GSGS RH WCIOA launch starts with the curriculum review workshop in Ouagadougou
The International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) marked a decisive step by officially launching the GSGS Regional Hub for West, Central, and the Indian Ocean Africa (GSGS RH WCIOA). This major event, coupled with a curriculum review workshop, took place in Ouagadougou from July 21 to 25, 2025.
The ceremony was presided over by Professor Hamma Yacouba, Secretary-General of 2iE. It gathered an exceptional array of partners, including leading academic representatives, sanitation sector experts, GSGS program Alumni, as well as international cooperation agencies and essential public institutions. The GSGS RH WCIOA, coordinated by the 2iE Institute, is an international platform dedicated to capacity building, research, and applied studies in the field of sanitation.Its mission is clear: to train highly skilled professionals capable of designing and implementing cross-cutting solutions to complex sanitation challenges.
The GSGS RH WCIOA benefits from a robust support structure. On the academic front, the Hub brings together over 10 academic partners across University félix Houphouët Boigny (UFHB), University of Man, University of Lagos, Centre for Water and Sanitation Studies- Rivers State university (CeWASS), University of Ebolowa, the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering(2iE), Jean Lorougnon Guede University (UJLoG), Cheikh Anta Diop university (ISE), University for Development Studies (UDS), Higher Polytechnic School of Antananarivo (ESPA) and University of N’Djamena. Its efforts are further supported by leading technical and financial organizations such as UNICEF, WaterAid, GIZ, GRET, The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA), IRC WASH, as well as key public institutions (like national water and sanitation (ONEA), National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS), and sectoral ministry in charge of sanitation in Burkina Faso). The five-day workshop included several essential practical activities for the Hub’s implementation, notably a visit to 2iE’s laboratories and the updating of training programs according to the new environmental and societal challenges, to ensure perfect alignment with specific field needs.
The launch of this Hub marks the firm commitment of GSGS RH WCIOA and its partners to provide Africa with the high-level expertise essential for tackling the major challenge of inclusive and sustainable sanitation.
