GSGS experts improve wastewater management in Antarctica

A research team from Technical University Uruguay applied a pilot Membrane Bio-reactor (MBR) system – a robust wastewater treatment technology that produces high quality effluent and allows the reuse of water – in Uruguayan Scientific Base Artigas on King George Island in Antarctica.
Prof. Hector Garcia Hernandez, Director GSGS Regional Hub Latin America, and the expedition lead, said the project, which also involved visits to other Antarctic bases to learn about their water and sanitation practices, is one of the most inspiring in his career.
Based on our research, we applied a pilot with a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment technology which can reuse water. This approach improves the current sanitation situation at the base and better protects the pristine environment of Antarctica

Besides a Professor, the UTEC Antarctica team included Dr. Alejandra Szabo (alumna of IHE Delft Institute for Water Education) and Berend Lolkema, both involved in the Master’s Program in Sanitation and Sanitary Engineering at UTEC, delivered under the GSGS in cooperation with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education.
