Greywater management in rural areas (India)

Thesis summary

The study to understand the greywater management scenario of rural India, the technologies available, and the reuse options available is carried out in three steps. As a first step, a literature study has been carried out. Total of 12 research papers related to greywater management in rural India and 2 relevant documents are studied and a few findings and conclusions are made and then two case studies of pilot greywater management technologies implemented are compared. As a second step, expert interviews were conducted who comes from different professional backgrounds to understand their opinions of greywater management in rural India and futuristic perspectives. As the last step of the research, field visits to two rural areas were conducted. At the end of the research study, a SWOT analysis of greywater management scenarios in rural India is done by integrating all findings. The study concludes that managing greywater is different from managing normal sewage as it has high chemical constituents and there is no standardization of characteristics available unlike for sewage. The study showed that to successfully manage greywater in rural India there is a need for the development of policy guidelines, standardization of characteristics, and enhancing community awareness and effective utilization of funds
