Green buildings in India (India)

Thesis summary

In recent decades, rapid development in Indian cities has given rise to environmental challenges such as pollution, heat islands, and the decline of green spaces, reflecting a neglect of urban ecosystems. The construction industry aims to prioritise improving living environments and enhancing the quality of life in buildings. Despite a limited number of designated green buildings, there’s an opportunity to advance key technologies for sustainable development. Green design emphasises water, energy, and material efficiency throughout the building lifecycle. The literature underscores the benefits of green buildings, yet India has just over 11,000 registered green building projects, indicating modest progress. This research employs qualitative and quantitative research to identify barriers and drivers of green building projects in Ahmedabad, revealing challenges like a lack of guidelines, incentives, and tenant awareness. Overcoming these obstacles requires widespread promotion, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative efforts to integrate green principles into the construction sector for sustainable urban development.
