Faecal sludge disposal in Abidjan District (Côte d’Ivoire)

Thesis summary

This study aims to contribute to the optimization of non-sewered sanitation management in Abidjan district. The data collected by the Office National de l’Assainissement et du Drainage (ONAD) on the collection-transport link, which is managed by the emptying operators, provides a significant amount of information for all the links of the chain. The percentage of operators who work in a formally guaranteed manner is currently only 32%, compared to 68% who operate informally. In the vehicle database, there are 349 registered vehicles, with 335 of them having been used in the last three years (2020, 2021, and 2022), with 68% of them being simple models and 32% being hydrocleaner types. The study enabled the ONAD to have a more organized dashboard for emptying activities in Abidjan district. It also provides great visibility on the transport link in Abidjan, which is managed by the emptying operators. The data updating and transparency can intended planning and decision-making tool required to manage non-sewered sanitation in Abidjan.
