Evaluation of WASH implementation in health centers (Cote d’Ivoire)

It is crucial for the global community, particularly in health facilities, to ensure infection prevention and control in rural areas in Africa. We conducted direct observations and interviewed five health center managers in March 2023 to assess the level of WASH implementation. Our research revealed that 80% of these facilities do not have a reliable daily water supply, which is a serious concern. Furthermore, we discovered that toilets are not accessible for disabled patients, which suggests a lack of inclusivity. Hand-washing facilities are not accessible to 40% of patients, and there is no designated shower or washing areas for patients in the facilities we visited. This study reveals significant challenges in ensuring access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in health facilities. It is clear that implementing the WASH component brings with it significant organizational and promotional challenges for these facilities.
