Evaluation of subsidy-free CLTS (Burkina Faso)

Thesis summary

This study aims to assess Community- Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in the East, Center-North and Center-West regions of Burkina Faso. More specifically, it involves studying the technical aspects, the socio-health impact and evaluating the perception of the populations of certified villages. It will also be a question of taking stock of the pilot experience of CLTS in emergency situations which took place in the Center-North. To meet these objectives, data collection was conducted in the regions concerned for a period of 20 days. Surveys were conducted in the Center-West while focus groups were held in the other two regions. As for the coordination actors, they were interviewed individually. After processing and analysis, it appears that in terms of perception, the approach has been well received by the populations, who keep their ODF status. The socio- health impact is felt on the one hand because of the reduction in diarrheal diseases among children and on the other by the fact that the end of OD has become a social norm in the communities. The technical analysis shows that many sanitation facilities are not approved regarding the national standards and that these facilities, overall, are not durable. CLTS is an approach that has so far proven itself in the fight against OD in Burkina Faso, however several aspects must be strengthened to allow the sustainability of the achievements, particularly at the technical and financial levels
