Evaluation of a faecal sludge treatment plant (Indonesia)

Lamongan Regency is located in East Java Province, Indonesia. By 2022, it was estimated that 92% of the population had access to improved sanitation_ Since the population still uses on-site wastewater management systems such as septic tanks. the fecal sludge needs to be treated in the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) known as IPLT. This study aims to evaluate the performance of IPLT Sidokumpul as the only FSTP in Lamongan. The evaluation is carried out by conducting a desk review to analyse the total volume of faecal sludge influent sent to the FSTP. To support the data, a field survey was also conducted to study the condition in the whole service area. The evaluation included assessing technical aspects such as the condition of the existing facility and the removal efficiency of unit processes. For the organizational aspect, Force Field Analysis (FFA) method was used to analyse the human resources and institutional system implemented in FSTP. The other aspect is community participation. It was used to evaluate the service coverage of the FSTP in the service area by delivering a questionnaire and holding a small interview about people’s knowledge of the facility and its services.
