Development of a FSM info hub (Bangladesh)

Thesis summary

Serious environmental contamination, especially in metropolitan areas, is being generated due to a lack of FSM services in Bangladesh, which has a serious impact on the economy and public health. Except for a small area of Dhaka city, on-site sanitation is common throughout the nation, and the enormous amount of faecal sludge produced in septic tanks and pits (of pit and flush latrines) is improperly managed. Many government and non-governmental organizations have undertaken various initiatives for FSM, but all of the information is to and from. Therefore, the objective of the study was to arrange all the information about FSM in Bangladesh from different authentic sources on one platform. To fulfil the objective, an Excel-based FSM information hub and a web page had been developed that contained all FSM-related information in Bangladesh but mainly focused on city corporations. The information that has been included in the FSM information hub includes FSM at the city corporation level, their objectives and participatory institutions, a tentative budget for a national level action plan for FSM, and the roles and responsibilities of city corporations; SWEEP, a non-governmental organization, and its activities on FSM; DPHE, a government organization, and its FSM-related activities; different NGO forums, BRAC, Oxfam, and others, and their activities on FSM in Bangladesh; FSM in the Rohingya camp, etc. All the information at the FSM information hub would be helpful for faecal sludge management and could be used to increase sanitation facilities in Bangladesh.
