Developing an enzyme from herbal and kitchen waste (India)

Thesis summary

An enzyme is obtained by fermenting fruits peels and herbs. This would also help in waste minimization in the municipal waste. To investigate the effectiveness of the bio enzyme developed various samples of water has been collected, namely the lake water where sewage water is discharged, and the inlet water to the primary clarifier of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. The factors that are analysed are appearance, true colour, odour, TSS, pH at 25°C, TDS, TSS, BOD5, COD, phosphate, total oil and grease, total Coliforms, thermo-tolerant Coliforms, and E.coli. The percentage reduction of the above said factors after adding bio-enzyme in different samples is observed after 5, 10, 15 and 25 days. Various proportions of bio enzyme are introduced on the samples to know the optimum proportion of the bio-enzyme needed for the process. The bio-enzyme developed has successfully worked in reducing the foul smell in the samples; made the water clear with reduced turbidity; change in the parameters when compared to initial stages.
