Deterioration in recipient water quality due to untreated sewer discharges (India)

Thesis summary

Untreated sewerage discharge is a significant problem majorly in developing countries. If discharged in natural stream, that can compromise the water quality of the stream. While doing sustainable water resources management for an area, planner has to consider water quality of the resources available. Main aim of the work presented in this report is to create a water quality assessment model that can determine dissolved oxygen (DO) degradation using a model based on Streeter-Phelps equation. A Python model is prepared for the system that can determine the DO levels of natural stream after mixing of untreated sewage from single or multiple outlets. The model can be used to interpret various output parameters that can help to understand the significance and scale of impact from untreated sewage point discharge. While working with multiple sources with different parameters and situated at staggered location along the stream. Jupyter notebook, an editor platform of Anaconda application is used as an interface for the Python syntax. Model is further used to calculate other related parameters like critical DO (DOc), location of DOc, oxygen sag curve. These parameters are important to do a water resource management plan for a river stretch. Inputs for the model are taken from the large scale project for model preparation and validation.
