Container-based sanitation for slums (Burkina Faso)
To promote access to sanitation facilities in inaccessible neighborhoods of Somgandé in Ouagadougou, a feasibility study for the introduction of container- based sanitation (CBS) was carried out. An inventory of sanitation was made, then a study of the acceptability of the CBS was carried out and finally the study of the technical and financial feasibility led to recommendations. To this end, 72 households were surveyed, interviews with resource persons were organized in order to predict their intentions to use and finance the system. Our results show that 94% of households have sanitation facilities (mostly latrines). Wastewater treatment works are less represented, most households discharge waste water into the streets. of acceptability, 81% of households accept and are motivated to pay for CBS technology compared to 19% who are not in favor of the system. The study confirms the approval of CBS by households, the majority expressing their willingness to pay the service despite the precarious financial capacity of some households. The qualitative data made it possible to analyze the institutional, regulatory and policy framework for non-collective sanitation. Two variants of the CBS have been proposed for implementation in the surveyed households, followed by an acceptance study which will detect the optimal choice of households based on the performance of the technology. The results of the acceptance will make it possible to retain an appropriate variant and generalize to Somgandé and many other undeveloped areas. It should be noted in passing that container-based sanitation is one of the inclusive sanitation options at the city level.
