Acceptance of container-based sanitation in rural areas (Burkina Faso)

Thesis summary

Container-based sanitation (CBS) can be seen as a solution to the challenges of sanitation in undeveloped areas in Burkina Faso. Built with removable and sealable containers, these toilets represent an end-to-end service hygienically collecting faeces. In order to determine the acceptability of CBS in the non- developed area of the Rural Municipality of Saaba, a statistical survey was carried out among 151 households in order to determine the perception of the populations on the conditions of acceptability of these toilets. The results obtained from these surveys show that 97% of the sample have latrines of which 99% are traditional latrines, 49% are in favour of installing CBS, while 30% of households hesitate and 21% categorically refuse to install these toilets. In addition, the study identified various elements that could positively influence the acceptance of CBS in the Rural Municipality of Saaba, namely: the opinions of family members (96% of cases), the support of donors (2% of cases), the opinions of friends (1% of cases) or finally encouragement from neighbors (1% of cases). The ideal features that a container-based toilet should have for surveyed households are: odor-free (32%), comfortable (22%), easy to use (20%), no bulky (9%), durable (9%) and no flies (8%).
