Collection of household waste (Côte d’Ivoire)

Thesis summary

The growth of urbanization and population has led to an increase in waste production, particularly in household waste, and this has presented challenges in managing waste in African cities. This not only poses a real threat to the environment but also to human health. This study aims to contribute to the improvement of household waste collection in San Pedro, SIVOIRCO, through an efficient and sustainable collection system. Our analysis of the current collection system revealed that it is generally ineffective, both organizationally and technically. Based on field observations and interviews, we concluded that the current collection system in San Pedro Zone 1 is not environmentally sound and needs to be rethought. The lack of cooperation among stakeholders, the population’s lack of civility, and the unsuitability of roads for motor vehicles are all obstacles to the effective and efficient collection of household waste in San Pedro. We propose sustainable and efficient collection strategies that seek to bring coherence to the efforts of all stakeholders, including administrative authorities, the SIVOIRCO company, and the population itself.
