Climate resilience in schools (India)
This report identifies children as the vulnerable group for the issue and addresses how to combat it at an institutional level, i.e. schools. The study identifies this gap and aims to recognize various measures to mitigate the climate risk and build the adaptive capacity of schools by designing a comprehensive framework to assess the environmental risk and the corresponding performance of the schools by adopting eco-friendly and climate-resilient practices. This study adopts the case study method to focus on the case city of Bhuj, Gujarat. This reinforces the pre-disaster preparedness of schools. This research used a pragmatic approach that included both quantitative and qualitative methods. To assess the performance of schools in Bhuj, multi-dimensional and multiple stakeholders were consulted through telephonic interviews, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions, onsite surveys, and observation. This framework can be applied for environmental risk assessment across schools globally with particular context-specific modifications. It sensitizes children who are pioneers of the coming tomorrow and mitigates their susceptibility to the risk. This will, in turn, help ensure long-term sustainability at an institutional level.
