Biogas power generation from domestic sewage treatment (India)

Thesis summary

Biological sludge, the major waste generated in a sewage treatment plant (STP) is a valuable carbonaceous resource, which can be efficiently utilized for generation of energy. Our study focusses on a STP with captive-biogas generation facilities and especially on decentralized large-scale municipal plants. It can be curtailed using biogas power and also reduction of non-renewable energy consumption and greenhouse gases (GHG) emission is must considering atmospheric Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). In this research we investigated a full-scale, 54MLD, Perungudi, Chennai Biogas Sewage Treatment Plant of Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board entailing a biogas power plant. Based on the findings, we produced a proposal for implementation of bio-gas power generation in a conventional 30MLD STP NTADCL in Tirupur, which is located 50km east of Coimbatore, TamilNadu, India.
