Battling open defecation (Indonesia)

Thesis summary

The provision of sanitation facilities in dense urban settlements is an important thing to do to improve the quality of public health, although there are various obstacles to its implementation. People who do not have sanitation facilities or use inadequate public sanitation facilities tend to practice open defecation. This is also the case in Semampir sub- district, which has the highest open defecation rate in Surabaya city, with 1,245 households. The high rate of open defecation due to the lack of sanitation facilities is one of the characteristics of slums. The result of the study is that of the 12 RWs where open defecation occurs, the level of compliance based on the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 3 of 2014 concerning Community-Based Total Sanitation, the upper part of the building is 96% compliant, the middle part is 5% compliant and the lower part is 2% compliant. Factors causing the high open defecation rate are still the lack of sanitation knowledge, culture, inadequate infrastructure, the lack of triggering activities, and the lack of control efforts from related OPDs. Strategies that can be used are improving the quality and availability of public latrines, increasing community self-help in maintaining public latrines, calling on regional representatives to immediately convey the need for healthy latrine construction, making sanitarian cadres and the community of RT 07 RW 05 Kelurahan Pegirian a role model in data collection and latrine maintenance to other areas.
